7 Reasons Why Your Heat Transfer Vinyl Might Be Peeling Off
Wondering why your heat transfer vinyl is not sticking?
Maybe you thought that it adhered properly, but after a few washes, you noticed the heat transfer vinyl peeling off.
Or maybe you could tell that your HTV was barely sticking after the press, so you weren’t all that surprised to notice the heat transfer vinyl coming off – but you really wish you understood what went wrong!?
Today we share you with you the 8 most common reasons why your HTV did not adhere properly to your fabric.
Why Is Your Heat Transfer Vinyl Peeling Off?
First of all, it is important to know that it is in actual fact pretty normal to have a heat press project go wrong. It happens to everybody, and these mistakes allow us to learn and improve.
So if you can’t figure out why your heat transfer vinyl won’t stick, we are here to help you learn more about the most common issues when it comes to applying your vinyl.
Here are 7 tips on how to prevent heat transfer vinyl from peeling:
1. Make Sure to Match the Vinyl to the Shirt Fabric
Did you know that it is important to match your type of vinyl to the correct type of fabric? So first of all, check the tag on your shirt to see what the shirt is made of. Next, use our list below to see if you used the right type of vinyl for your shirt.
Nylon: Most crafters love working with Nylon shirts, which means that you need to purchase heat transfer vinyl for nylon. (Click here to grab some heat transfer vinyl for nylon).
Spandex: If you are working with Spandex, you should work with Vinyl that loves sticking to Spandex. Click here to grab some Craft Perfect HTV that is perfect for Spandex.
Other Types: For shirts made from cotton, poly, cotton/poly blends, and more, the safest choice is Siser Easyweed. Siser Easyweed is really popular and it is a great quality vinyl. Click here to grab some Siser Easyweed vinyl.
2. Make Sure to Follow the Instructions
All vinyl comes with instructions. Simply follow them for the best results. It is important to get the time, temperature, and pressure settings correct, in order to adhere to your HTV correctly.
This is why we prefer to use a heat press machine instead of an iron because then you can set and control each of these settings.
3. Avoid Adhere Vinyl to Zips, Buttons, Collars and Thick Seams
Have a good think about your vinyl transfer placement. Areas that are raised can cause more headaches than what it is worth! You will lose a lot of pressure over areas that are raised, which will result in some vinyl adhering properly whilst other sections might still be a bit loose.
Fortunately, you can use a heat pillow if you are really set on the idea of adhering your design over raised areas. But if you are a beginner, we highly recommend that you keep things simple and just try to avoid these areas for now.
Click here if you want to grab a heat transfer pillow.
4. Does the Fabric have a Coating?
Another common problem can sometimes be that the fabric has a coating on it. Some shirts have a waterproof coating, whilst others might have a fire-retardant coating.
Vinyl sticks to the fibers of the fabrics, so if there is a coating on top, it will stop the vinyl from adhering correctly. So best to grab some blank apparel that doesn’t have a coating to keep life nice and easy.
We love grabbing our blank apparel from Happy Crafters. They have shirts, polos, caps, bags, activewear and more. Click here to see their range.
5. Check Your Heat Press
Does your heat press distribute heat evenly? Some heat press machines tend to have hot and colds spots – which will obviously cause problems with how well your vinyl will adhere.
Sometimes the heating elements in a heat press will stop working properly. So it might be time for a new machine. Why not check out our handy guide to help you find the best heat press machine for vinyl.
6. Hot Peeling vs Cold Peeling
Are you peeling off the vinyl backing whilst your vinyl is hot, or do you wait for it to cool down? Which is the right way? Well as always, it is best to check your vinyl’s instructions.
Some types of heat transfer vinyl require their backing to be peeled off straight away (so whilst it is still hot), whilst other types of vinyl require you to cool it down completely before you remove the plastic carrier.
Check the instructions on the packet.
7. Did you Use Fabric Softener?
Some crafters love to pre-wash their apparel. And sometimes, without even thinking you might add fabric softener, just like you would when washing your everyday clothes. The trouble is that the softener creates a bit of a coating in between your fibers, and this causes problems when your vinyl tries to stick to those same fibers.
I recommend that you forget about pre-washing your clothes, or if you do feel the need to do so, at least stay away from the fabric softener.
Tips for Getting your Vinyl To Stick when Using an Iron
Are you using an iron, instead of a heat press machine?
Here is a video that has some great tips on how to get your HTV to stick when using an iron.
I’m curious to know if you managed to figure out what went wrong with your vinyl? Please let us know below why your vinyl was peeling off. If you have any additional tips on how to help your HTV stay adhered, please share them with all our readers in the comments below.

Pink Craft Heat Press Review [Reasons Why We Love This Press]!
So you love the color pink, but maybe you are scared about whether this pink Craft Heat Press will offer the same quality and professional results as some of the other popular heat presses on the market!?
Today we wanted to run through why this adorable pink Craft Heat Press is such a big hit with the ladies. But before we do, I also wanted to point out one MAJOR SELLING point about this heat press.
We love the fact that if you are slightly unsure about whether this heat press is for you, you can in actual fact rent it first to give it a test drive!
Happy Renters has a fabulous program where you can rent a heat press machine before you purchase it, check out the details on their heat press rental here!
But, back to our pink Craft Heat Press review to show you why we love this nifty machine so much!
Craft Heat Press Review
Here are some reasons why the Craft Heat Press is such a great buy!
1. Small Size
The Pink Press is the perfect size for females. It has a great size (9″ x 12″) but, it is small enough to keep out of the way in the craft room and small enough to port around to crafty group gatherings.
2. It is Lightweight
This heat press weighs only 35 lbs. It is truly lightweight. So no more struggling to move that big heavy heat press to a working table every single time you want to use it. This heat press is light enough for any girl to carry around with ease.
3. Pressure Adjustment
Honestly, if you are still using an iron instead of a heat press, it might be time to upgrade this lovely pink heat press, simply because of the fact that you can adjust the pressure. Stop wasting your energy and muscle-strength of trying to apply pressure manually with an iron, when a machine can do all the hard work for you!
Whilst we are on the topic of an iron, you might like this blog post of ours that looks at the comparison between a heat press vs. an iron.
4. Accurate Temperature Control
This heat press might be pink and look girlie, but it will deliver precise temperature control for every press. The heating element in this press is accurate and ensure that the temperature is always evenly distributed.
What is even better is that the heat press has a digital temperature display. So handy as each type of vinyl requires a different temperature setting, something that you can easily set with this press.
5. Timer Makes it Easy to Use
Now you know that as females we all love to multitask right!? Why do one thing when you can knock 3 things out in the same amount of time. Fortunately, this heat press has a digital timer that you can set. Simply read the vinyl packet instructions and set the time and DING you are done!
6. Professional Quality
Now, remember how we questioned whether this pink heat press will deliver the same professional quality as other machines? You will be happy to know that this machine is well worth the investment. It delivers quality long-lasting results.
No peeling of vinyl from shirts if you follow the instructions correctly.
7. One-Year Warranty
Now I also know that as females, we often question whether we are making the right decision when it comes to purchasing more expensive items. A lovely selling point on this Craft Heat Press is that it comes with a one-year warranty.
So you can rest assured that this machine has been made to last, and if for any reason anything does go wrong, you will be backed by a full 1-year warranty. Great for peace of mind!
Now, of course, you can’t just buy a machine because it is cute or simply because it happens to be pink. So I hope that we have proved to you that whilst this machine is ‘girlie’, it is also tough and professional.
Still not feeling convinced? Here is a great video to give you a better idea of what the Pink Heat Press is all about:
Don’t forget that if you want to try this machine out, you can rent it for a totally affordable price.
But if you have decided that this is the machine for you, you can either grab it from Happy Crafters or from Amazon.
Decided that this is NOT the machine for you? Don’t worry, we have a fabulous guide that will help you find the best heat press for home use to use for your DIY crafts. Go check it out!

Top 10 Things To Look for When Buying a Heat Press
Are you in the process of purchasing a heat press machine?
Before you do, here are some top features to look out for. There are huge differences in quality and durability of heat press machines on the market. Which is why there are also huge price differences in the machines. It is important to invest in a machine that will be able to live up to your demands and expectations.
If you would like to skip this post, you can find the best heat press machine for your demands in our guide. Otherwise, keep reading to find out how you can make smarter decisions when purchasing your first heat press.
Things to Look for in a Heat Press
1. Heat Distribution Across the Platen
Your machine needs to be able to provide consistent, even temperatures across the platen. One of the most common problems with cheaper heat presses is that they do not manage heat distribution very well.
For brands that deliver excellently and even heat across their platen, look at the popular Hotronic heat press machines. These machines have three times more heating element than other presses which is why they are the preferred brand for those who take their heat pressing seriously.
2. Accurate Temperature
Heat press machines are so much better than irons, due to the fact that you can actually set and control their temperature. When you apply the transfer, it is essential to have the correct temperature settings in order to process a heat transfer successfully.
Too little heat and you might find your graphic coming loose after only a few washes. Too much heat and you push the adhesive of your transfer too far into the fibers of the shirt, causing the image to look washed out and pale.
Of course, a more expensive heat press machines typically have more reliable and accurate temperature readings. Look for a machine that has a cal-rod heating element.
3. Even Pressure
You want a heat press that has centralized pressure adjustment, together with a flotational heat platen. We personally prefer swing-away heat presses due to their ability to hand pressure a lot better in comparison to the clamshell type machines.
4. Easy to Open and Close
You want a machine that opens in a smooth and fluid motion. An easy-to-open press is even more important if you are mass producing custom shirts on a daily basis.
5. Digital Time and Temperature
Cheaper heat presses rely on manual or bell timers. They also typically have a dial thermostat. Whilst this is perfectly fine if you are only heat printing occasionally, you would want a digital time and temperature control panel for heavier workloads. Digital settings are also fabulous as you can input your desired settings and use them time and time again.
6. Easy-to-Position Garment
How easily can you place your garment on your heat press? How easy is it to work with precision placement? For example, if you are purchasing a clam-shell press, it is easier to burn yourself whilst trying to position the garment and transfer in exactly the right place. Precision placement is a lot easier with a swing-away style press. If you are set on purchasing a clam-shell (or you have limited space at home), you might prefer to look into the Hotronix Clamshell Heat Presses as they feature a wide 65-degree opening (which is 10% wider than other brands).
7. Size
What does your workspace look like? What sort of space do you have available for the heat press? If you have limited space, you might prefer to research a clamshell design as they take up less workspace. Clamshell models require at least 2 feet of countertop space. You will also need to have room next to the press in order to layout your garment, weed your transfer or place your completed items.
If you have more space available to you, the swing-away models require at least 3 feet and are in our opinion a better buy.
8. Compatible with Your Workload
Look for a heat press that has thick platens as these retain heat better than the thin platen ones. If you are only after a machine for occasional jobs, you might be able to get away with one of the cheaper heat press machines, but for those of you who have high-volume production runs, we highly recommend that you invest in a Stahls or Hotronix heat press as these can handle the grunt of everyday use.
9. Warranty
Ensure that you have a look at the length of the warranty that comes with your heat press. We prefer to invest in a machine that comes with a lifetime warranty on the heat platen.
10. Customer Service
What sort of customer service is available for the brand of heat press that you are looking to purchase. If anything goes wrong with the press, you want to know that there is a qualified service representative available to help. See if they have a website and if you can easily find the phone number or online chat button to ask for help.
